Description

We were doomed from the start...

Okay, so I've had a story idea in my head for the longest time now. These two aren't the main main characters, but they're pretty darn important. Based on the prologue. haha Anywho...read the excerpt below if you want to know more.

The shadows seemed alive in the night as they danced under the flickering torches set outside the houses along the cobbled street. Some sputtered and died at intervals, slowly allowing the dark of night to conquer the city. There was no rain coming and only a light, intermittent breeze to prolong the battle, though the war was already won. As the moon rose higher and higher in the sky, one by one the torches dimmed and went out. To all of the citizens, it had been a royal decree that was to be followed, albeit a strange one. They could never know that each torch that faded to shadow was bringing about a tragic end to the unseen eyes that watched from one darkened window in the castle above.

“They are almost gone.” The whisper was shaky, revealing no precise emotion, but it was enough. Arms moved forward out of the dark room behind the figure to wrap around the woman's hips. With a sharp breath, she leaned backwards against the steady form of the man behind her. “After this...”

“Shh,” he responded quietly, turning her around to pull her close. His smile that had continued to enchant her throughout their moments together was now in full force, though the sorrow behind it was palpable. “Let us not talk of it.” With that, he leaned forward and kissed her. All her being seemed to catch fire, every emotion within her suddenly used as kindling for her need to be close to him one last time.

Only once more before the torches went out. Only once before the guards came.

Only once before she and her love were forced to leave each other behind until their deaths reunited them once more.

As the King's decree.

So as the last torch began to sputter, two souls bound together by love attempted to say everything they felt by saying nothing at all.
